Consider yourself lucky if you are reading this, you most likely not to have lived in a society with extreme judgements, sentences, and punishments. Back in the good old days if you did something wrong, for example stole a goat, chicken, Adultery, you were pretty much assured being handed a death sentence. In those days there was no hanging around on Death Row, contemplating the errors of your ways whilst waiting for some form of humane, painless death. Executions in the ancient history seems to be so barbaric and devices used were built with careful engineering to push the guilty to feel extreme and prolonged pain before death. Caution, this post will make you feel like a bit of a Peeping Tom. We’re about to take a rather voyeuristic tour of a Japanese bath house in the year 1951, with LIFE photographer Michael Rougier. It was the year Japan’s post-war occupation by the allied countries would come to an end but the bath house has clearly grown accustomed to its Western clientele of enthusiastic American officers.

Rougier captures some telling moments between the bath house ladies and their male clients; at times maternal and respectful and others more flirtatious and audacious. Let’s take our appointment and watch these two cultures curiously collide in the unlikeliest of settings..
