Mesut Hançer holds the hand of his 15-year-old daughter Irmak, who died in the earthquake in Turkiye
Search teams and emer gency aid from around the world poured into Turkiye and Syria on Tuesday as rescuers working in free- zing temperatures dug metimes with their bare hands through the remains of buildings flattened by a po- werful earthquake. The toll soared above 7.100 and wasstill expected to rise.
Unstable tangled piles of metal and concrete made the search efforts perilous, while freezing temperatures made them ever more urgent, as wor- ries grew about how long those trapped could survive in the cold. More than 8,000 people have been pulled from the de- bris in Turkiye alone, and so-me 380,000 have taken refuge in government shelters or hotels.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said 13 mil- lion of the country's 85 million were affected in some way and declared a state of emer- gency in 10 provinces for three months. AGENCIES
